Overview and mechanism of action of Ravulizumab, a long-acting complement C5 inhibitor - Prof Neil Sheerin, National Renal Complement Therapeutics Centre, Newcastle
Prof. Neil Sheerin is the Professor of Nephrology at Newcastle University and a Consultant Nephrologist at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. Professor Neil Sheerin is the Lead Clinician for transplantation at the National Renal Complement Therapeutics Centre, which is commissioned by NHS England to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with atypical HUS.
He moved to Newcastle in 2007 from Guy’s Hospital, London where he was a Senior Lecturer in Renal Medicine and before that a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellow. His laboratory research is focused on immune mediated renal disease, with a specific interest the role of the complement system in native and transplant kidney disease and also in the mechanisms of fibrosis in kidney disease. His clinical interests include complement mediated renal disease, kidney transplantation and the treatment of patients with progressive chronic kidney disease.

Dr Paramit Chowdhury trained in Nephrology in the South Thames Region and was appointed as a Consultant Nephrologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in 2006. He has a particular interest in the role of complement in renal diseases having undertaken a PhD in innate immunity supervised by Professors Neil Sheerin and Steve Sacks at King’s College, London. He is a Principal Investigator in the ALXN1210-aHUS-311 study.

Speaker: Processor Claire Sharpe, Professor of Renal Medicine, King’s College London and King’s College Hospital.
Bio: Claire Sharpe graduated in Medicine from University College London in 1991 and after specializing in Renal Medicine commenced research in renal fibrosis at King’s College London in 1998 with a Kidney Research UK Clinical Training Fellowship. After completing her PhD, she was awarded a Department of Health/MRC 5-year Clinician Scientist Intermediate Fellowship to continue her research and completed her specialist clinical training in 2004, taking up a honorary consultant post at King’s College Hospital. In 2009 she was awarded an NHS/HEFCE Clinical Senior Lectureship and was promoted to Professor in 2019. Claire's main research interest is in the study of cell signaling pathways in renal fibrosis with a focus on discovering new therapeutic targets. Her clinical specialty is the management patients with renal complications of sickle cell disease. She is also Deputy Dean for Stage 2 of the MBBS undergraduate programme at KCL, co-chair of the UK Renal Fibrosis Network and Treasurer and Trustee of the Renal Association.
